October 24, 2012  By

West Nyack, a hamlet filled with art and culture, and one of the nation’s most lucrative malls, is situated in the town of Clarkstown in Rockland County.

The Palisades Mall is the eighth largest shopping mall in the United States. It houses over 400 stores, featuring: shoes, accessories, fashion, electronics, books, toys and hobbies, health and beauty, maternity, jewelry, gifts, entertainment, and dining and eateries.

In 1947, a group of renowned artists, including Aaron Copland, (one of the most respected classical composers of the 20th century), Paulette Goddard, (film actress), Maxwell Anderson, (Pulitzer Prize winner), and Helen Hayes, (actress nicknamed First Lady of the American Theatre), founded the Rockland Foundation now known as the Rockland Center of the Arts. They created this center in order to benefit from the enormous creative talent in the region.

The Rockland Center for the Arts is a multi-arts cultural center that provides exhibitions, workshops, recitals, and literary and performing art events. Classes offered include: fine arts, drawing, painting, ceramics, glass, jewelry, fiber arts, creative writing, and family workshops. The center presents jazz performances and speakers such as Toni Morrison, Pulitzer Prize winner and novelist known for her epic themes.
